I've searched the 'net for days now, and cannot find a single definitive solution to this, and even Microsoft seem utterly bereft of information.

This is a major pain in the rear, as apart from the obvious detrimental effect on the drives' lifespan, any time I access the drive (fairly often, as I offload all my 2 x dSLR pics onto it, and dump all sorts of other stuff there) I'm faced with the power-up and subsequent delay before I or any software can use it. I can't hear it going off, but I can hear it spinning up when it's accessed. I'm not sure how long, but it can't be any more than about 5 or 10 minutes. I've set the HD power-down to "never" in power options, which I assume is a global setting, as there are no drive-specific entries, and any power settings in the BIOS are set similarly, and yet the drive still powers-down after only a short time.

I've just built a new PC specifically for 'net use (the one I'm posting this from), and it's fairly standard kit Gigabyte G31M-ES2L motherboard, with a Seagate 1TB ST31000528AS (sata) as boot drive, and my old 400GB ST3400832A (parallel) as a data dump.Įverything works absolutely fine, apart from this issue with the 400GB (non-boot) drive. Hi, I found this thread through a google search, as I seem to be having a very similar problem to denzils'. It has to run as a task as it resets it's self everytime the computer shuts down or sleeps and quiethdd needs to be manually started again to take effect (or automatically through a task). I've not heard the hard drive park it's head since setting that up. I just run a task for that to start up around 8pm everyday when the house starts to get calm and quiet. None of the power settings in windows make the blindest bit of difference. I'm not so sure that the hard drve doesn't have the final say though as it is a known and documented feature of a Eco friendly hard drive and written into the firmware. I couldn't seem to get into BIOS no matter how hard I tried, but I'm sure you're right that it could be fixed trough there by changing a setting. I'd suspect its something in BIOS.I'd doubt the hard drive has the final say. Make sure nothing is set to shut down/power off. Check Power settings relate to current state.ie plugged in etc.
